Music in Images
A spectacular new project by Verso!
This programme explores the relationship between music and images, musical movement versus the visual arts. This is expressed with the help of film projections, computer simulation, live electronics, and of course special sounds for panflute and guitar.

Starting point for the artists is the use of musical parameters as movement and time.
The main thread in the programme is the correspondence between the famous graphic designer M.C. Escher and his cousin, the composer Rudolf Escher. The first tried to suggest movement and time in his woodcuts (like the Metamorphoses), though as paintings they were static objects. He agreed with the latter that these works could actually be viewed as surrogate films. Despite several attempts they never came to a complete agreement, or a joint artwork.

Verso asked several artists to make a new attempt. Composer Rene Uijlenhout will cooperate with the English video artist Jane Parker, and Michiel Mensingh is looking for a collaboration with director and film maker Harro Henkemans.

The facial expressions of composer Danny de Graan will be visible on several hundreds of pictures, corresponding with the character of the music. Jos Zwaanenburg will project images of the musicians themselves. Then there will also be existing music by Toru Takemitsu based on paintings by Paul Klee, and much more.
